Original Asterix Cover Art, Moebius, and Frank Frazetta to Auction

Heritage Auctions

Uderzo's Asterix cover painting

A rare Albert Uderzo cover painting for the Asterix adventure Les Lauriers de César leads Heritage Auctions' April 18–19 International Comic Art sale.

Few of Uderzo’s cover paintings have ever gone under the hammer as most remain in institutional collections or the artist’s estate. The 12 inch by 16 inch piece is accompanied by an interior page plus two early works by Uderzo showcasing his character Belloy.

Other highlights include:

  • work by Jean Giraud, also known as Moebius, including Silver Surfer, The Airtight Garage, The Snake Woman, and Blueberry
  • the first Johnny Comet Sunday comic strip art, dated February 2, 1952, by Frank Frazetta
  • works by Gene Colan, the illustrious Romita family — both Sr. and Jr. — Bill Sienkiewicz and Jack Kirby.
  • Gene Colan pages including a splash page from Daredevil No. 68, story pages from Daredevil No. 20 and No. 60, and a Sub-Mariner No. 43 story page.
  • Jack Kirby's Silver Surfer page from Fantastic Four No. 76
  • cover art from The Complete Crumb Comics Vol. 10 and a story page from Weirdo No. 7 by Robert Crumb

The auction also features original Manga art including a color page by Jiro Kuwata from Moonlight Mask alongside works by Osamu Tezuka.
